Mangalore, September 27th: 'Narration for Documentaries' a workshop by Dr. Padmakumar K was
taken place for Animation and Filmmaking students of iNurture at Srinivas
University City Campus, Mangalore.
Objective
of the Industry Lecture:
Voice
over/ narration is one of the key aspects in documentary films, a filmmaker
needs to work on his vocal delivery skills. It is a need to know the importance
of a good voice over, voice modulation and techniques to make one’s voice over
effective. Learning various exercises to improve voice, preparing quick bytes
for advertisements are necessary skills that young filmmakers need to learn.
Hence, It is necessary to have an interaction with a specialist who has
mastered vocal delivery in his career.
Brief of
Speakers and Guests:
Dr
Padmakumar K is Associate Professor and Head of Department of Corporate
Communication at Manipal Institute of Communication, Manipal Academy of Higher
Education, where he teaches courses in Radio production and other Media Related
Subjects. Prior to his academic work, he spent ten years in Commercial Radio
(Sun TV Network, Radiocity 91.1 FM, India) in positions ranging from RJ to show
producer to Programming Director. During this time, he hosted prime-time shows.
He was conferred with the ‘Young Communicator’ award by SIMC (Category Radio
2008), and was also the recipient of the ‘Whatte Champ’ award (Innovation and
Business Impact), Radio City.
He
visited Hochschule Bremen, Germany for a period of three months, on a DAAD
Fellowship and conducted classes in International Media Systems. He was invited
as a Plenary Speaker for the Asia Media Forum, held in Incheon, South Korea in
2013. Recently, he was invited as a Speaker for Broadcast Asia, June 2015 held
in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore to talk about the transformation of media and
communication in the Indian Context.
He has
conducted several radio workshops in Universities and Colleges in India and
abroad. He has presented his research papers at various International
conferences in Spain, Norway, Germany, Singapore, Seoul, Malaysia, Indonesia,
Colombo, Dubai, and Thailand.
He also
did a short stint as a news anchor with a private TV network. His areas of
interest include Farm Communication, Commercial Radio Production, Community
Media, Corporate Communication and Marketing.
He was
also a Programming / Marketing Consultant for The Manipal Group, a leading
newspaper group in Karnataka for their FM radio ventures in Karnataka, India.
His
publications are largely in the field of Radio and Social Media, Community
Media & development, Alternative Media.
Summary
of lecture debriefs and experiential learning activities:
The first session started with Dr. Padmakumar explaining the different qualities of the
voice artist. He further discussed the process of woodshedding and various
elements of voice artists. He also gave
his insights on scripting structure, the need to know the audience, various
conflicts, and delivery style. He also elaborated on the 9 vocal elements for
skill full vocal delivery, namely Inflection/Deflection, Emphasis, Volume,
Pause, Breath, Phrasing, Flow, Mood, and Energy.
Dr. Padmakumar
further engaged the students by demonstrating various techniques for voice
culture. He persuaded the students to come ahead and try out some of the
exercises practically.
In the second session, the students were given a portion of the script from ‘Finding Dory’.
The students were asked to demonstrate all the vocal elements they learned in
the session. All the students were able to actively participate and contribute
to the session.
